The Cognition, Emotion, and Life Experiences Lab (part of the Psychosocial Research Program) at Butler Hospital is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for a full-time research assistant (RA) position to work on projects led by Principal Investigators Michael Armey, PhD, Chris Hughes, PhD, Heather Schatten, PhD, and Gemma Wallace, PhD. This role involves working on studies focused on predicting and intervening on suicidal thoughts and behaviors in daily life and during high-risk time periods. Current grant-funded studies involve behavioral and physiological assessments, smartphone and wearable device technology (e.g., biosensors, smartwatches), and technology-based treatment development and implementation for suicide in psychiatric hospital settings. This position would be a good fit for individuals wishing to pursue graduate or medical school in the future. We are considering applicants who can start immediately through July 2026.
Butler Hospital is a Brown University-affiliated psychiatric hospital located in Providence, RI. Butler Hospital is one of the earliest psychiatric facilities established in the United States. The Psychosocial Research Program is one of several active research groups at Butler Hospital. Dr. Ivan Miller is the director, and the program is comprised of academic psychologists, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, master’s-level interventionists, and project coordinators. Research in this group is currently funded by numerous NIH and other grants, and primarily centers on suicide prevention, post-hospital transitions, technology-assisted assessment and intervention, mood and psychotic disorders, and comorbid conditions (substance use disorders and physical health problems) conducted in a variety of clinical settings.
Job Description: Main duties include overseeing participant recruitment, scheduling, and compensation; conducting clinical assessments with research participants; maintaining participant records and datafiles; developing research study materials, manuals, and databases; maintaining Internal Review Board (IRB) documents and approval; restocking research supplies; and maintaining a professional and collegial work environment with colleagues, supervisors, hospital staff members, and study participants.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field required. Experience with clinical or behavioral health research and/or working with psychiatric populations is desirable. The position requires good organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Experience using R, RStudio, SPSS, and REDCap is a plus.
Hours: Weekdays with some evening and/or weekend hours
